Mid Century Modern is a distinctive design style that began in the 1930s and continued until the 1970s. It can be applied to architecture, furniture, graphic design, fabric prints and a large range of products. The 1950s is perhaps the peak of the design period and it is those classic 50s designs that come to mind first for most people. But the 1960s space age style was equally important.  Mid Century modern was primarily an American  movement but it was simultaneously developing in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Int he UK it was known as Festival design due to the Festival of Britain which launched many British designers. Key names in MCM movement include, Charles and Ray Eames, Corbusier, Arne Jacobson, Eero Saarinen and Robin and Lucienne Day to name but a few.
